Financial aid to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence

Switzerland is committed to combating violence against women and domestic violence. Based on Article 386 of the Criminal Code, the Confederation provides financial aid for projects and regular activities that contribute to the prevention of violence against women and domestic violence. The Federal Office for Gender Equality (FOGE) is responsible for awarding around 3 million francs annually for this purpose.

The Confederation pursues three goals in preventing and combatting violence:

  • Reduce the causes and risk factors for violent crimes against women and domestic violence so that violence does not occur in the first place.
  • Identify and stop threatening or incipient violence at an early stage.
  • Reduce the negative consequences of criminal offences and prevent subsequent criminal offences.

The Confederation supports these projects

Public and private non-profit organisations can submit applications for financial aid. The Confederation gives precedence to supporting projects that meet the following requirements:

  • The main objective is the prevention of violent crime.
  • The project should aim as directly and explicitly as possible at preventing or reducing violence.
  • The project meets an actual and proven need.
  • The project is national, regional or cross-cantonal in scope and aims to have the broadest possible impact.
