The public sector has to set an example in encouraging equality at work and in opposing discrimination of any kind.
The Confederation, the cantons and communes are committed together to closing the gender pay gap and to putting into practice the principle of equal pay for equal work enshrined in the constitution.
Thanks to its commitment to equal pay, Switzerland received the 2018 United Nations Public Service Award in the category “Promoting gender responsive public services to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. The Charter for equal pay in the public sector, through which public authorities commit to eliminate pay inequality in their scope of influence, significantly contributed to that recognition.
