The FOGE in brief

The Federal Office for Gender Equality was established by the Federal Council in 1988 and is now part of the Federal Department of the Interior. The Federal Constitution Article on equality before the law and the Gender Equality Act form the basis of our mandate which is to:

Promote gender equality in all areas of life, i.e. to eliminate all forms of direct and indirect discrimination.

We focus on championing:

  • legal equality, as well as equal opportunities and equal pay at work. This also includes preventing sexual harassment in the workplace;
  • fair task sharing in the family and on preventing violence in relationships between couples.

The FOGE does not operate at the level of individual cases but aims to raise awareness of  the need for structural changes, seeking cooperation with other Federal Offices, parliamentarians, men's and women's organizations, as well as with social partners and businesses. International cooperation is also high on our agenda.

Our main types of action:

  • information
  • consultations
  • financial support

Thank you for your interest in the FOGE!
